Mariners sink Roar with blockbuster second half

A classy Central Coast Mariners outfit has ambushed the Queensland Roar, upsetting them 4-2 in a match with a blockbuster five goal second half at Suncorp Stadium.

The win came at a cost for the Mariners though, with Ahmed Elrich expected to miss the rest of the season after damaging his anterior cruciate ligament.

A lackluster performance from the Roar made Mariners’ keeper Mark Bosnich’s entry back into professional football in front of a crowd of 12,185 people at Suncorp Stadium a smooth one.

However the same can’t be said for Roar keeper Liam Reddy, with coach Frank Farina describing his performance as shocking, but not bad enough to see him get dropped.

“It’s not the first shocker Liam has had in his career, and it probably won’t be his last,” Farina said.

Queensland Roar were playing catch up for the second week running, after Predrag Bojic fed a pinpoint long ball to Matt Simon in the 31st minute.

Reddy came off his line to intercept the pass, but was beaten to the ball by Simon.

After the Mariners scored again in the 48th minute, Farina made a triple interchange 12 minutes later, subbing Andrew Packer, Tahj Minniecon and Robbie Kruse on for Michael Zullo, Reinaldo and Hyuk-Su Seo.

“We were going nowhere … we had to do something to inject a bit of go and a bit of oomph. I think we did get that spark,” Farina said.

However the substitutions failed to halt the Mariners’ momentum when a mix up between Reddy and Luke De Vere in the 64th minute gave Mariners substitute Dylan Macallister an easy goal.

Roar finally found the back of the net in the 69th minute, when Charles Miller fired a penalty shot from 25 metres out which passed a ducking Bradley Porter.

Bosnich vented his frustration with a tirade of abuse at his teammates in the wall for not jumping.

Whatever Bosnich yelled must have worked, as Macallister scored his second goal two minutes later after some silky one touch passing from his teammates, extending their lead to 4-1.

“Tonight showed that we’ve got a a few good options up front and it will make Lawrie’s job really hard for the next game in a few weeks,” Macallister said.

Bosnich was partly to blame for the Roar’s final goal of the match when he came off his line to stop a break made by Massimo Murdocca and took his legs out from under him.

He was lucky not to be red carded.

The referee awarded a penalty on the spot which Serginho Van Dijk slotted away easily.

McKinna was more than happy with the result.

“We scored some very nice goals, but overall, coming to Queensland and winning 4-2, not many teams do that,” he said.

“Especially after the way they played against Adelaide last week.”
