Three-time National Football League Most Valuable Player Brett Favre made a triumphant return from retirement, leading his new team, the New York Jets, past Miami 20-14 today.

The 38-year-old quarterback who spent 16 years with Green Bay completed 15-of-22 passes for 193 yards and two touchdowns to defeat a club guided by the quarterback he replaced with the Jets, Chad Pennington.

“It was shaky, but it’s a good start,” Favre said. “It’s a win and you can never question a win.”

Favre threw a 56-yard touchdown pass to Jerricho Cotchery in the first quarter and a 22-yard touchdown pass to Chansi Stuckey in the second quarter, the latter throw on a fourth down after evading Dolphins pass rushers.

Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis intercepted a Pennington pass in the end zone with five seconds remaining to secure the victory over a team that went 1-15 last season and turned to a passer who spent eight years with the Jets.

Favre retired in the off-season, changed his mind and decided to return and prompted the Packers to trade him in a soap opera that could help make the Jets a contender.

Super Bowl loser New England might be in the market for a quarterback after reigning NFL MVP Tom Brady suffered a left knee injury early in a 17-10 Patriots triumph over Kansas City. The injury will be examined Monday.

Brady, who set an NFL record with 50 touchdown passes last season, went down grabbing his left knee when he was hit by Kansas City safety Bernard Pollard while throwing a pass with midway into the first quarter.

Jake Delhomme’s 14-yard touchdown pass to Dante Rosario on the final play of the game lifted the Carolina Panthers past San Diego 26-24. Delhomme completed 23-of-47 passes for 247 yards, including 8-of-11 on the game-winning drive.

Tony Romo completed 24-of-32 passes for 318 yards to lead Dallas past Cleveland 28-10. Marion Barber scored on a pair of one-yard runs and Romo threw a 35-yard touchdown pass to Terrell Owens to spark the Cowboys.

Reggie Bush caught a 41-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter to lift the New Orleans Saints past Tampa Bay 24-20, capping a difficult week for a team that was displaced for practice sessions by Hurricane Gustav.

Three years after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina that forced a relocation for the entire season, the Saints escaped with only having to move some practice sessions to Indianapolis.

“I’m just really happy we were able to win a close game,” said Bush, who ran 13 times for 50 yards and caught eight passes for 111 yards. “Last year we lost a few close games. This year the defense stepped up and played great for us.”

In other NFL season openers, Baltimore defeated Cincinnati 17-10, Buffalo beat Seattle 34-10, Philadelphia crushed St. Louis 38-3, Pittsburgh pounded Houston 38-17, Atlanta beat Detroit 34-21, Tennessee thumped Jacksonville 17-10 and Arizona defeated San Francisco 23-13.
