Australian rugby rotten from the ground up

Australian rugby is rotting away from the most important level of all: the juniors. Several dads who have taken their sons through junior rugby, have explained the problem to me, and there is a long list of complaints about the way it’s being managed.

1. The rugby union dad has to fork out money for jerseys (returned at end of season), shorts and socks, and insurance.

2. By comparison, if the same kid is enrolled in rugby league, all he has to do is roll up for match day. All significant expenses are paid for.

3. Coaching from prominent people at the local premier rugby club are either rare or none at all.

4. By comparison, league kids are ensured visits by prominent professional players in their junior district.

If rugby union is wondering why it’s game is failing to make an impact on the football sporting landscape, the above reasons should give a pretty good explanation.

No sport can survive if it’s unwilling or unable to feed its own paddocks.
