Townsville have earned a gritty 97-80 NBL victory over Perth at the Townsville Entertainment Centre.

Four players hit double figures for the Crocs, but 200-gamer and Townsville local Kelvin Robertson stole the show with a game-high 27 points.

Cameron Tovey (15), Rosell Ellis (14) and John Rillie (10) all chipped in.

Darnell Hinson was the Cats’ best with 15 points while Shawn Redhage (14) and Peter Crawford (13) provided good support.

In a scrappy first quarter neither side was able to assert any real dominance with the game locked up at 22-22.

Townsville clicked into gear early in the second, building a 10-point lead on the back of nine first-half points from Robertson.

But Wildcat Redhage fired up at the attacking end to see his side down by only one at the main break.

The dogfight continued in the third with the Crocs taking a four-point lead into the final term, only for Robertson to drill consecutive three-pointers late in the fourth to ensure Townsville remain unbeaten at home in 2008.

Townsville coach Trevor Gleeson praised the contribution of his bench and in particular the performance of local product Robertson.

“We got a lot of energy with Kelvin (Robertson), Michael (Cedar) and Cam (Tovey) coming off the bench in that first quarter,” Gleeson said.

“Kel was outstanding, the little dynamo is playing great basketball, he is a little bit quicker, faster and he can finish at the hole with that floater.

“It was just an outstanding game, we needed that boost.”

Perth coach Conner Henry conceded his side was let down by an undisciplined defensive effort.

“We felt we had a good game plan, containing Corey Williams and trying to take away their threes,” Henry said.

“We just didn’t stick to our defensive principles the whole night, we got loose for three- or four-minute stretches in the game.”
