Australia’s players will today travel to Delhi – and a few other locations – for some time to rest and let the reality of their humiliating second Test loss sink in.

The 320-run defeat to India at Mohali was the Australian team’s worst defeat in terms of runs since they were beaten by the West Indies by 343 runs in Barbados in 1991.

It was the worst loss suffered since Ricky Ponting became Test captain in 2004, and was a resounding reminder that the Australians’ time as the world’s runaway Test match champions is about to end.

For his part Ponting was frank about how badly his team had played.

“We were not good enough in any aspect of this game,” he said.

“Whether it be our fast bowling or our spin bowling, our batting and probably at certain times our fielding as well was a bit sloppy.

“We were outplayed in every aspect of the game and sometimes as a captain and a player, you just have to accept that and say they were better than us this week.

“I think we were better than them last week, but that’s irrelevant now.

“They are 1-0 up and we have some work to do going into the next Test match.”

Ponting has told his players to clear their minds of cricket for the next few days before the team re-convenes in Delhi to prepare for the third Test, which starts on October 29.

A handful of the squad will journey to Agra during the week for an obligatory visit to the Taj Mahal, while some are travelling to other parts of the country for their break.
