North Queensland Fury’s entry into the 2009-2010 A-League season is almost complete with name, logo and colours announced today with further player signings not far from completion.

With formalities now out of the way inaugural Fury coach Ian Ferguson has set about assembling his squad around star signing Socceroo centre back and Newcastle Jets captain Jade North.

The former Glasgow Rangers star believed the acquisition of North as a marquee player would see the fledgling franchise build a strong roster for their maiden assault on the premiership.

“He is a fantastic player he is one of the top players in the A-League and we are delighted to get him,” Ferguson said.

“We were pretty pleased at how Jade put himself out there and showed that he wanted to come here and that was a big part on obviously getting him here.

“I think we just need to get a competitive team out there and see how we are going in the first year.

“We have to find our feet – everyone is going to be four or five years ahead of us.”

Although not in a position to confirm any further contracts, Ferguson admitted the Fury was currently in talks with player managers and would not rule out any other big name signings.

“…We are actually in negotiation with two or three players just now and in the coming weeks we will be able to announce them,” Ferguson said.

“There are a lot of players that I am looking at just now.

“Wayne (Srhoj) is obviously a quality player, again any team would have him in their A-League team, and he is one that we would definitely be interested in if he came available.”

Football Federation Australia CEO Ben Buckley, on hand to deliver the license agreement, praised the work of the Townsville bid team.

“It is not easy putting professional sports franchise together but we have been certainly delighted and in full admiration the work that (Fury chairman Don Matheson) and his team have done,” Buckley said.

“The passion, the enthusiasm and we have been delighted to see thousands and thousands of fans come out to support the bid that really helped deliver the result.”

“We certainly believe in their business model that they have got good calibre people.

“Ian is a very experienced coach, the work he did on the Central Coast building a true community asset is a good model to follow.

“Don Matheson and the board are experienced people within the North Queensland community so that is a very substantial ingredient to have to kick things off successfully.”

The club will reveal their playing strip in April, having unveiled their logo – a green football and palm fond set on a white background, at today’s launch.
