Channel 10's amateurish rugby coverage is an insult to viewers

Channel 10’s coverage of the Wallabies Spring tour has been abysmal. Dull, uninspired and disinterested studio commentators lead to match commentators who don’t have the minimum knowledge, all of which is set out in the match day programme.

The Waratahs are from New South Wales, not Sydney. The Brumbies are from The Australian Capital Territory. Players names are mispronounced. Replacements are missed. There are not even minimal match statistics at half or full time.

But the Wallabies game against France was the final straw. Bill Woods and Ben Tune glibly talked through the lineups prior to the game, including a graphic of Wallabies team with Cross at 13, Mitchell at 11 and Ashley-Cooper at 15.

The commentator, unaware of changes to the Australian lineup that had been made three hours prior to the kickoff due to Ryan Cross’s withdrawal, called Mitchell for Ioane, Cross for Ashley Cooper and Ashley-Cooper for Mitchell throughout the first 40 minutes.

Despite Mitchell and Ashley-Cooper being well known international rugby players, he blithely continued the mistake and destroyed his own credibility and hence the value of his call.

The ARU and Channel 10 are in the entertainment business. Despite this, the ARU and its broadcaster continues to serve up amateurish coverage of its premier product to Rugby’s AB demographic audience, the most discerning audience in media, is simply insulting and unacceptable.
