New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori says sadness and concern were his first emotions after the Mumbai terrorist attacks and he is unsure what impact they will have on the cricketing world.
Vettori, who played for Delhi in this year’s Indian Premier League (IPL), was stunned to hear of Thursday’s events.
He is not scheduled to return to India until next year’s second edition of the IPL in April but said it was too soon to make any safety assessments.
“My first reaction is to sit back as a human being first and foremost and watch what has unfolded over the last 12-24 hours and realise it is a reasonably scary situation,” he said.
“As a cricketer, like any country we tour, there is a process that is involved with the security people that are a lot more knowledgeable than we are. We’ve trusted them in the past and we’ll trust them again.
“A tour there for the New Zealand side is still a long way away but obviously there is the IPL which is in April-May, and once again we’ll back the knowledge of the people that know it a lot better than us.”
Former captain Stephen Fleming is the only New Zealand cricketer directly affected by today’s events, as he was preparing to fly to India this weekend as player-coach of the Chennai Super Kings in next week’s Twenty20 Champions League.
He was not immediately available for comment and was understood to be awaiting word from India.
Vettori said it was too soon to say what impact the attacks would have on world cricket, with Pakistan already a no-go zone for touring sides.
“You want cricket to be played in all parts of the world and that has been the problem with Pakistan, you haven’t been able to tour there because of the volatile country,” he said.
“If other countries start going down that road then there will only be three or four countries you can play.
“You never really want to go down that road so you leave it to the people who make those decisions.”
