Former Newcastle goalkeeper Liam Reddy says the Queensland Roar can’t afford to continue their dreadful home form against his old team on Sunday.
In four seasons of A-League action, the Roar have lost every game against the Jets at Suncorp Stadium and haven’t even got on the score sheet.
With Queensland slipping to fourth on the table with their 1-all draw away to Central Coast on Saturday, Reddy said victory over struggling Newcastle was crucial to their title hopes.
“If we can’t win this week we’re going to be in a little bit of trouble, we might drop out of the four, so it’s a big game for us,” he said.
Although last-placed Newcastle’s premiership defence is in tatters after a six-game winless run, Reddy is wary of the cellar dwellers.
One of their two victories this season came at an otherwise-dominant Roar’s expense in September when Joel Griffiths snuck home a late match-winner.
“We’re pretty confident but they’re always up for it when they come up here,” said Reddy, who played the inaugural A-League season with Newcastle.
“It doesn’t matter where they’re coming on the ladder I think they’ll definitely be ready to play because they haven’t lost up here.”
In their five previous encounters in Brisbane, the Jets have won 1-0 four times and 3-0 in the other.
Griffiths is back from suspension in a major boost for Newcastle, who fell 2-1 to Sydney FC on Sunday, as they confront the best defensive team in the league.
“We’ll have out work cut out for the back four and myself keeping him contained so it should be a good game,” Reddy said.
Last season’s thrilling 3-2 preliminary final loss in Newcastle still cuts Queensland deep and the Roar custodian is keen for some form of revenge.
“Winning this game might stop them making the top four which would be nice but it still won’t make up for last season,” he said.
