Veteran defender Iain Fyfe says Sydney FC will be out to prove a point to their own frustrated fans in Sunday’s A-League clash with Perth.

The pre-season favourites are yet to emerge from a form slump having won just one of their last seven games and sinking to sixth place on the ladder.

Sydney fans have been vocal in their criticism of the team this season, both at games and on fan websites and forums, and Fyfe admitted the side had been deserving of the treatment.

But the stand-in skipper said the side was determined to gives its fans at the Sydney Football Stadium every reason to believe Sydney still can challenge for this year’s title.

“There’s been a fair few people that have kind of gone against us,” Fyfe said.

“But we’ll use that as motivation on Sunday to prove everyone wrong.

“Our fans are entitled to their opinion, we haven’t been playing up to scratch we know that.

“That’s just something we’re going to have to correct.

“We’ve still got the greatest fans in the league and the boys know that and they’re as much a part of this team as we are.”

Despite sitting sixth, Sydney are only two points outside the top four with six games to play.

A comfortable win on Sunday could shoot them as high as second, and Fyfe believes it is the team’s biggest game of the season.

“I don’t think we should ignore the fact there’s only six games left and we have to win a couple of games,” Fyfe said.

“The boys know that and we’ve been in these situations a few times where they’re do-or-die games and the boys always rise to the occasion.”

Sydney coach John Kosmina may field an unchanged line-up from last weekend’s 2-1 loss to Central Coast, although he is considering recalling veteran attacker Steve Corica, who was rested for the Mariners match.

Perth, meanwhile, could welcome back Argentine attacker Adrian Trinidad after he overcame an ankle problem.

The Glory, who are unbeaten in three matches, have proved they are anything but easybeats this season and could move to within a point of Sydney if they win.

Strikers Nikita Rukavytsya and top scorer Eugene Dadi would pose the biggest threat to Sydney, according to Fyfe.

“They’ve got a lot of firepower upfront and they’re scoring goals and playing really well so we can’t let our guard down,” he said.
