Manager heaps praise on Cahill

Everton manager David Moyes has heaped praise on makeshift striker Tim Cahill, crediting the Australian with firing his team back towards the English Premier League’s top four.

Injuries to Yakubu, Louis Saha, James Vaughan and Victor Anichebe left the Toffees with no recognised strikers during December.

But midfielder Cahill has excelled playing out of position up front, scoring winners against Manchester City and Middlesbrough.

Everton are sixth on the table, three points behind fifth-placed Arsenal.

“Tim has done a really good job for us in the last few weeks,” Moyes told the Everton website.

“He has relished playing up front and maybe that’s the reason he has come back into top form again – he’s enjoying playing with a little bit more freedom.

“It’s giving him the opportunity to attack more and it’s released him from the job he’d had to do before.”

Moyes has also been impressed by 29-year-old Cahill’s work ethic and commitment.

“We couldn’t be happier with him,” the manager added.

“I’d go as far as saying his performances have been the best from a centre-forward that we have had this season. His effort has been tremendous.”

Cahill had a belated start to the season with a foot injury but has since played an increasingly important role in Moyes’ side.

The Socceroos star recently revealed he had been putting in extra training to make up for time lost during his injury lay-off.

Moyes said: “He’s looking sharp and working hard.

“The way he goes about his job has been pleasing to see.

“I have always thought that Tim had the talent to play as centre forward. I’m not surprised he has done so well in that role.”
