Fast bowler Mitchell Johnson is likely to play in the remaining three one-day matches against South Africa after being recalled to the Australian squad on Monday.

Johnson was rested from Australia’s two Twenty20 wins and the first two matches of the one-day series, which is currently locked 1-1, after his mammoth workload in Tests in India and the home series against New Zealand and South Africa.

But the left-armer returned to the squad of 13, which has him in line to play in the next three matches in Sydney (Friday), Adelaide (Monday) and Perth (January 30).

Johnson’s return meant Queensland’s Ryan Harris, who made his debut in Sunday’s win in Hobart, was released from the squad.

Harris will be able to play in Wednesday’s Twenty20 preliminary final against Victoria at the Gabba.

However, Cricket Australia (CA) has ruled out releasing any other players from the national squad to play in either Wednesday’s match or Saturday’s Twenty20 final in Sydney.

That means Victoria will be without Cameron White and David Hussey and Queensland will be without James Hopes for Wednesday’s game, while NSW will not be allowed to call on Nathan Bracken, Nathan Hauritz, Brad Haddin or David Warner for the final.
CA acting chief executive officer Michael Brown said the selectors and Australian team management had agreed not to release any other players given the status of the current series.

“The sole focus needs to be on the preparation and performance of this group in Australian colours during what is an important and tough series against the No.2-ranked one-day international team in the world, South Africa,” Brown said.

“As such, no players from this squad will be released for either the preliminary final or the final of the Twenty20 (competition).”

AUSTRALIA squad: Ricky Ponting (capt), Nathan Bracken, Brad Haddin, Nathan Hauritz, Ben Hilfenhaus, James Hopes, David Hussey, Mike Hussey, Mitchell Johnson, Shaun Marsh, Shaun Tait, David Warner, Cameron White.
