Now he is a professional cyclist again, sleep comes first for Lance Armstrong. Asked whether he would watch the inauguration of American president Barack Obama on Tuesday night, Armstrong said he must rest instead.

Armstrong had the opening stage of Adelaide’s Tour Down Under on Tuesday and raced in furnace-like heat.

He main priority post-race was to recover as quickly as possible, with an early night the priority.

“With the Tour Down Under, I’ve got to sleep,” he said.

“They’ve got this thing called YouTube now, so I will wake up in the morning and watch the whole thing.

“But I’m excited and I think everyone in the United States is excited – I see he’s polling at 80 per cent approval rating.

“I wish I had those approval numbers.”

Wednesday’s second stage from Hahndorf to Stirling in the Adelaide Hills will features some nasty climbs and it could prove decisive.

Armstrong is nervous, saying the three laps of the finishing circuit could destroy the field if it is hot again.

“It’s hot, man – it’s a dry heat, but it affects performance a lot,” he said.

“There’s really no way to perform at a high level when it’s 40 degrees, so you just cope and drink as much as you can.

“We must have gone through maybe 15-20 bottles each today.”
