Mark Riddell is well on the way to transferring his NRL cult status to the English Super League with the nuggety former Parramatta hooker scoring a double on his Wigan debut.
Riddell scored two tries in Wigan’s 28-24 trial win over the Nathan Brown coached Huddersfield at Galpharm Stadium on Sunday night (Australian time), the feat matching the double he scored on his NRL debut with St George Illawarra in 2001.
It was Riddell at his best as he burrowed his way over from close range in the 20th minute for Wigan’s opening try of the match, the move he had used with such great success in Australia catching the Giants unawares.
Then with his his side trailing 24-16 late in the contest, Riddell crossed again from short range as the visitors scored two tries in the final four minutes to snatch a dramatic four-point win, Brown still with some work to do before his side’s season opener against Catalans Dragons on February 14.
“We did some good things but we didn’t do them for long enough or with enough consistency, which is the key to being a good team,” Brown said.
“We were negative and that played into Wigan’s hands. The disappointing thing was conceding two tries from dummy-half.”
Former Wests Tigers skipper Brett Hodgson kicked two goals in his first run for the Giants.
