A-League newcomers North Queensland Fury will know on Tuesday whether or not they have been successful in their pursuit of former Liverpool great Robbie Fowler.

The Fury have been in talks with the former England international since he was released by English Premier League side Blackburn recently.

The 33-year-old visited Townsville last month to meet with coach Ian Ferguson and said he was “very impressed” with the club before returning home to London to discuss the move with his family.

The Fury had hoped to learn over the weekend whether Fowler had agreed to become their inaugural marquee player but will find out on Tuesday with plans to hold last-minute talks with the striker late on Monday.

“They get back to us tomorrow and one way or another we’re going to have an announcement on Wednesday,” Fury chairman Don Matheson said.

“We’ll probably talk to him more tonight and I’ll probably get more of gut feeling (of the chances) on it then.

“We haven’t had as much communication as I would have like over the weekend but we have organised to talk to him again.

“They’ve said one way or the other we’ll know by Tuesday.”

Fowler also visited Australia in 2007 when he was on the verge of joining Sydney FC but the deal ultimately fell through.

The Fury are also in talks with Socceroos midfielder Scott Chipperfield, and it’s likely he would become their prime marquee target if Fowler turns down his offer.
