Best brews to discuss a rugby match over

A couple of weeks ago somebody on The Roar suggested it could be fun if posters listed the kind of beer they like to drink while watching rugby live, or at home in front of the TV.

I’ll take it a stage further by listing some favourite after-the-game pubs. I’ll start by mentioning the Wheatsheaf after an Easts game, then take off for foreign climes.

In England, the White Swan on the river at Twickenham is a great rugby pub. My memory may be failing, but I seem to recall a delicious Flowers bitter there. (And please, no moaning about lightly chilled beer. If you don’t like British ales, tell us what you do like.)

Then there’s the White Hart in Chiswick, which has Wells Bombardier on tap. Oh, for a pint right now! In Edinburgh, there’s the Queen’s Arms, which has a fine selection of keg beers from the Stewart brewery. When Scotland wins, it flows. It flows when they lose, too.

In Paris, I like the Pub O’Paris for a Hoegaarden pilsner. Powerful stuff! In Toulouse, there’s La Terrace, which has excellent German Spaten on draft.

In the States, there’s some good rugby and some truly great beers brewed by the micros. I did a wonderful crawl through Washington State, Oregon and California. Ninkasi, Hales’s, Redhook, Lost Coast, Bison, Pyramid, and a wonderful pale ale from the Stone brewery in San Diego.
