Tim Cahill bounced back from injury to help English Premier League Everton cruise to a 4-0 win against Wigan Athletic on Sunday.

Cahill picked up a calf injury in mid-March and was left on the bench for the Socceroos’ 2-0 World Cup qualifier win over Uzbekistan in Sydney last week.

But after undergoing treatment in Australia, the star midfielder flew back to England fit enough to be picked by manager David Moyes to start against Wigan.

Everton’s on-loan Brazilian striker Jo opened the scoring for the Toffees in the 26th minute before Marouane Fellaini doubled their lead early in the second half.

Jo notched up his second goal of the match on the 51-minute mark, tapping the ball into the net after Wigan keeper Chris Kirkland palmed out a Fellaini drive.

Leon Osman sealed Everton’s biggest victory of the season in the 61st minute, allowing Moyes to replace Cahill, Steven Pienaar and Fellaini who had all been on international duty mid-week.

Moyes said some of his players had been left fatigued by their international duties and travel.

“Tim Cahill had travelled half way around the world, so it gives you the option to get them off as soon as we could,” he told the BBC.

“Even the boys who have played in Europe who have had two games, mentally it’s a strain for them to go again and play again and coming into the Premier League the games are all so important and us managers are desperate to get another result.”

In other European games, Scott Chipperfield came on as a second half substitute for FC Basel’s 1-1 draw with Bellinzona in the Swiss Super League while Michael Beauchamp celebrated AaB’s 2-1 win over AGF Aarhus in Denmark’s SAS Ligaen.

James Troisi, Mile Jedinak and Bruce Djite all featured in Genclerbirligi’s 4-2 loss to Antalyaspor in the Turkish Super Lig.
