North Queensland posted their third straight NRL victory with a convincing 36-10 win over the Newcastle Knights at Dairy Farmers Stadium on Monday night.
The Cowboys continued their charge to the top eight with the six-tries-to-two win but it may come at a cost with five-eighth Travis Burns limping off during the second half with a knee injury.
Johnathan Thurston and Luke O’Donnell were the backbone behind the win with starring performances, grabbing a try each while the Test halfback also booted six goals.
It was an unhappy trip for second-placed Knights with poor handling ruining their hopes of four straight wins after bombing two first-half tries.
The home side got on the board early through Burns (fourth minute) and continued to pile on the points through John Williams (20th), Steve Southern (29th) for a 18-6 halftime lead.
The Cowboys then kept the pressure on after the break with Antonio Kaufusi (47th), Luke ODonnell (58th) and Thurston (64th) all crossing to end any chance of a Knights comeback.
Chris Houston (14th) bagged the Knights’ only first-half try while and Akuila Uate (67th) crossed in the second half.
Knights backrower Zeb Taia will face a nervous wait after he was placed on report for a high tackle on the John Williams while Danny Wicks was also reported for striking O’Donnell in the 75th minute.
