Young guns have starred in round 13 of the NRL with second-gamer Scott Porter inspiring Cronulla to a win over the Warriors, while Daniel Mortimer played a big hand in helping Parramatta to victory against Newcastle.

Porter drew big praise from Sharks coach Ricky Stuart after his side fought their way off the bottom of the NRL ladder with an 18-10 win over the Warriors at Toyota Park on Sunday.

It was just the third win of the season for the Sharks and their second in as many weeks after snapping a nine game losing streak against Parramatta last weekend and relegated the Sydney Rooster to last.

The Sharks have turned their season around since 24-year-old Porter, who has his own lawnmowing business, has joined the side from playing NSW Cup.

But the halfback wasn’t willing to take credit for Cronulla’s win.

“It’s sort of a tough time for the boys, nine weeks in a row where they couldn’t win and Stick (coach Ricky Stuart) sort of sat me down and had a talk to me and told me what he wanted from me just a bit more better organisation and kicking game,” Porter said.

“I sort of hope that I have brought that to the team.

“Yeah the last two times I’ve played we’ve won and hopefully that we can keep winning.

“I don’t take credit for it, it’s a team effort. Everyone works hard, just as much as I do.”

New Parramatta five-eighth Mortimer, also a second-gamer, was instrumental in the Eels’ 20-18 upset victory over Newcastle at EnergyAustralia Stadium in Newcastle on Sunday.

“I’m kind of the Steven Bradbury of rugby league, everyone in front of me just falls over,” Mortimer said.

Melbourne whiz kid Joseph Tomane scored a triple in the Storm’s 48-4 thrashing of Brisbane at Olympic Park on Friday night.

The 19-year-old winger contributed 24 points to the Storm’s score in just his ninth first-grade game.

Jonathan Thurston bucked the trend and showed the youngsters they still have a long way to go to match him in skill and experience when he continued his purple patch of form with 10 points in North Queensland’s 46-12 demolition of South Sydney just three days after winning man of the match for Queensland in State of Origin.

Penrith halfback Luke Walsh contributed two tries in the Panthers 26-10 drubbing of the Wests Tigers, while last year’s break-out cult hero David Williams scored a 90-metre try which helped Manly to a 38-18 victory over the Sydney Roosters.
