Australian captain Ricky Ponting has won the toss and opted to bat first late on the opening day of the third Ashes Test at Edgbaston.

The tourists have made one change with Shane Watson replacing Phillip Hughes at the top of the order.

England have made just the one injury-enforced change from the side that won at Lord’s with Ian Bell in for Kevin Pietersen.

Play is scheduled to commence at 5pm (0200 AEST) with the start of the match having been delayed because of the heavy outfield.

AUSTRALIA: Shane Watson, Simon Katich, Ricky Ponting (capt), Mike Hussey, Michael Clarke, Marcus North, Brad Haddin, Mitchell Johnson, Nathan Hauritz, Peter Siddle, Ben Hilfenhaus.

ENGLAND: Andrew Strauss (capt), Alastair Cook, Ravi Bopara, Ian Bell, Paul Collingwood, Matt Prior, Andrew Flintoff, Stuart Broad, Graeme Swann, James Anderson, Graham Onions
