The Young Socceroos signed off their Under 20 World Cup build up with a dramatic late goal flurry to beat their United States counterparts 3-1 in Rosario, Argentina.

Trailing 1-0 late in Wednesday’s game, the Australians scored three goals in the last six minutes to secure a stunning victory and third place in the four-team Copa Ciudad de Rosario tournament.

The US, who had not conceded a goal in their previous two games, took the lead in the 28th minute but Australia created plenty of opportunities in search of an equaliser.

The breakthrough finally came in the 87th minute when Sydney FC striker Chris Payne set up Newcastle Jets youngster Jason Naidovski.

Australia then took the lead in the 90th minute when a cross from Rocco Visconte found Isaka Cernak.

Payne sealed the result deep into injury time after being set up by an Aaron Mooy counter attack.

Young Socceroos coach Jan Versleijen heaped praise on his side for the comeback.

“It was a great effort,” Versleijen said.

“I believed we deserved a draw and to get three goals in the last six minutes of the game was amazing.

“The win has come at a great time in the tour as we have played some tough games and this will give the group a lot of confidence.”

Argentine club CA Tiro Federal won the tournament after beating Uruguay 2-1.

The Argentinean tour is Australia’s final warm-up for the FIFA Under 20 World Cup, which will be held in Egypt from September 24 to October 16.
