For seven seasons the Goodall Cup has been the ultimate prize for the Australian Ice Hockey League, Australia’s ancient ice hockey talisman has been handed back to Ice Hockey Australia for the states to fight over in its centenary year.

IHA will be hosting an event celebrating the cup’s centenary in Adelaide come October, with the six hockey-playing states competing for the cup interspersed by the old-timers games held bi-annually at the Adelaide rink during the same period.

For the Australian Ice Hockey League, it’s a time for new traditions.

2010 will be the AIHL’s 10th anniversary, the league getting underway in 2000.

In those ten seasons, the league will have grown from the original three (Bears, Knights and Avalanche) to six, then eight, and who knows how many teams and how far it will spread with opportunities to extend the borders further East, West, North and South?

The AIHL is in the process of developing a stunning new perpetual trophy. Additionally, two legends of the sport’s formative days will be honoured in name in new awards.

Projects are underway to mine old data and stats on previous seasons, and reveal milestones and records both established and hidden.

The unveiling of the new perpetual prize for Australia’s greatest ice hockey team will be at this year’s VIP AIHL Finals Series, to be held at Hunter Ice Skating Stadium in the Newcastle area on Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th of August.
