Judd picked ahead of Ablett in dream team

Clearly the two best fielders in the game at the moment are Gary Ablett and Chris Judd. Gary Ablett is a magnificent player and I love watching him play.

He’s fast, skilful, beautifully balanced, reads the play well, is nearly impossible to tackle and he handles the ball at top pace as well as anyone I’ve ever seen.

But if I had to choose between the two and pick someone to play for my team tomorrow, I’d pick Chris Judd.

Ablett’s statistics this year are more impressive, but the stats don’t always tell the full story. Judd achieves the same impact on a game with fewer possessions.

But the main reason I’m picking Judd is because of what he’s done for the Carlton Football Club.

When Chris Judd arrived at Carlton, they were a pretty ordinary team with a hot and cold full forward and group of talented young players secured in the draft.

Judd has picked up the whole lot of them, put them on his back, and said, “Come with me up the ladder, boys”.

He’s been the difference between winning and losing more often than any other Carlton player. And even when he hasn’t played brilliantly, he’s set the example on the field for the others to follow.

By all accounts, he also sets the same example on the training track and as ambassador for his club.

He’s done this since his first year at Carlton when injury restricted his running ability. And he had to change his game to become more of an inside player to do it in that first year.

How often have you seen a player do that? It’s been an extraordinary performance.

Gary Ablett might be able to do the same thing in the same set of circumstances, but Chris Judd has proven he can.

So he gets my nod.
