Victoria are poised to join NSW in the final eight of the lucrative inaugural Champions League Twenty20 cricket tournament in India.

The Blues booked their spot in the League Stage by completing their second Group B win from as many games with a 35-run victory over English County Sussex Sharks in New Delhi on Sunday night.

The Bushrangers look almost certain to join them, irrespective of the outcome of their second Group D clash with Sri Lanka’s Wayamba Elevens in New Delhi on Tuesday night.

The Bushrangers crushed local favourites Delhi Daredevils in their first game.

With the Indian side subsequently thumping Wayamba by 50 runs on Sunday night, Delhi and Victoria look almost certain to advance to the last eight, unless the Sri Lankans cause a massive boilover on Tuesday and inflict a heavy defeat on the Bushrangers.

While the composition of the last eight has still to be determined, Victoria and Delhi look likely to advance to the League Stage matches to be played in Bangalore and Delhi, with matches starting on Thursday.

They will play two out of South Africa’s Cape Cobras, New Zealand’s Otago Volts and India’s Royal Challenge Bangalore.

NSW are certain of finishing top of their group after two big victories and will head to Hyderabad for their League Stage matches starting on Friday.

The Blues and either Sussex or South Africa’s Diamond Eagles will be in the same second-phase group as two out of Trinidad and Tobago, English County Somerset India’s Deccan Charges.

NSW followed up their opening 53-run win over Diamond Eagles with another strong showing against Sussex.

The Australian domestic Twenty20 champions scored 2-130 on a slow and low wicket, with opener Phil Hughes scoring 62 not out off 64 balls and Moises Henriques hitting an unbeaten 51 off 33 in a third-wicket stand of 90.

Sussex never recovered after Brett Lee bowled the English County side’s skipper Ed Joyce for a duck.

Henriques took 3-23 to earn the Man-Of-The-Match award.

The rest of the NSW attack also performed well with Lee taking 1-8 from his four overs, despite suffering a blow on his left thumb while attempting a return catch.

He said the thumb was sore but okay and team officials later confirmed he had suffered nothing more serious than bruising.
