The decision of young Mitchell Marsh to turn his back on a AFL career to follow in his father and brothers footsteps as a professional cricketer, looks a smart one today after the 18 year-old hit the fastest 50 ever by a West Australian.

The young Warrior got his half century off just 24 balls on his way to a score of 60 not out. The highlight of his innings were three long, flat sixes that had the crowed ducking for cover.

Mitchell wasn’t the only Marsh to thrive in the 129-run win over New South Wales.

Older brother Shaun hit his second domestic one-day hundred of 116, while being the rock the WA innings was built around.

His century off 141 balls, including 11 fours and one 6, showed the new-found patience and composure that was also on display when he notched his maiden international ton in India.

If he can carry over this form and mental approach there may be another contender for Matthew Hayden’s vacated opening position.

The success of these two brothers is not only great news for the recently struggling Western Warriors, but a good sign for the future of Australian cricket.

With the careers of Ponting, Clarke, North and Hussey all closer to the end than the start, it is heartening to see some of the young talent performing at the domestic level.

Names like Ferguson, Hughes, Warner, White and now two Marsh’s look like they will be ready to step in and fill the void and continue Australia’s domination of international cricket.
