Appleby avoids drama to take lead in Australian Open

Stuart Appleby leads the Australian Open by six shots after a drama-filled second day at NSW Golf Club. Appleby fired a second consecutive six-under round of 66 to move to 12-under and was one of only a handful of players to complete their second rounds.

More than five hours was lost on Friday morning after winds reached speeds of up to 65km/h, meaning the tournament is now way behind schedule.

Plenty of players voiced their frustration at organisers, believing the greens were too fast for the conditions.

When play was halted on Friday night at 7.50pm due to bad light, Appleby led by six shots from compatriot Adam Scott, who picked up two shots to move to six-under through six holes.

First round co-leader Scott Hend had lost a stroke to fall into a tie for third on five-under with Peter Wilson, who failed to begin his second round on Friday.

Despite his blistering first two days, Appleby insisted he wasn’t quite in “the zone”.

“I’m scoring well but in the zone is more like when you’re eight or ten under par (for the round) and you just want to get to the next hole and make a birdie,” he said.

“You’re not out here thinking like that. You’re trying to befriend each hole on the golf course.”

Some players now face a nightmare day on Saturday as organisers rush to get the tournament completed on time.

Conditions are expected to ease after the wild winds of Friday.
