Will these Socceroos make the plane?

Many have their opinions on who should be on the plane to South Africa, and with only a few positions left, I think it’s important to look at logical arguments for what players will be effective against the opposition the Socceroos will face.

I think only a few names will be up for debate, so let’s discuss a few borderline players.

I’d like to start with Scott McDonald, who has played solidly for the Socceroos. However, out of his 15 appearances, he’s failed to score a single goal.

He’s a proven goal threat in Europe and plays for arguably the biggest club in Scotland.

I think Macca deserves to go just because of his achievements playing Champions League last season, Europa this season and his efforts against the Republic of Ireland. He’s only 26 this year and has at least one more World Cup in him.

Next up is the famous or infamous Nicky Carle, the man proclaimed by many as Australia’s most skillful player

Carle is currently getting limited game time in the championship, and he was less than impressive in the Kuwait game.

However, many suggest that he was under instructions to play a certain way and that the pitch probably didn’t help. Time is running out for him.

Carle will be 29 at the end of the year. Realistically, I think he is a long shot.

Archie Thompson is a proven goal scorer in the A-League and an experienced Socceroo from the days of Guus.

The Victory man needed to prove his worth against Kuwait, asking for “one last chance”, and although he’s a crowd favorite down here in Melbourne, many feel that he’s not cut out for the world stage.

I think this time, Archie won’t be making the trip.

Dario Vidoic, the form Roar man, is fast becoming a star on the Socceroos scene. Even though he is not playing as much as he would like for Nurnberg in the Bundesliga, he has made a handful of starts and is looking to impress his new coach.

Vidoic was a standout against Kuwait, in my opinion. He has at least two more World Cups in him and his speed is something the Socceroos would surely be able to use as an impact player.

Alex Brosque is one of the few A-League players I feel who has a real chance to fight his way into the squad. Unfortunately, Brosque was injured before the Kuwait game and didn’t get a chance to show off his stuff.

Matthew Spiranovic is the last name I’ll bring up. He’s in the position of potentially not only making the plane, but making the starting eleven in South Africa. If Spiranovic can succeed in the J-league over the next four months, he is a must to at least make the plane to South Africa.

I’m sure there are a few more names to put into the spotlight. Let me know what you think.
