Tim Cahill’s recent goalscoring touch evaded him in front of an open goal as Liverpool ended Everton’s nine-match English Premier League unbeaten run with a 1-0 win at Anfield.

The Socceroos midfielder had Everton’s best chance of the match in the first half when he pounced unmarked on a failed clearance from Javier Mascherano.

But Cahill, renowned as one of the best in the air in the Premier League, missed a chance to make it three goals in his last three games, reacting well but blasting a diving header over the bar from close range.

Dutchman Dirk Kuyt netted the winner in the second half in a fiery derby that saw Liverpool’s Sotirios Kyrgiakos sent off from two-footed tackle on Marouane Fellaini that ended with the Belgian being sent to hospital.

Everton’s Steven Pienaar also saw red in a match that saw Liverpool move back in to the top four.

Elsewhere on Saturday, Socceroos goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer made several impressive saves as Fulham held on for a scoreless draw with Bolton at the Reebok Stadium.

Kevin Davies looked to have won the game for the home side in the last minute when his header beat Schwarzer but the referee disallowed the goal after an alleged push by Zat Knight in the lead-up.

It wasn’t a happy night for fellow Australian Brett Emerton, whose Blackburn side suffered a 3-0 thrashing at Stoke.

Vince Grella was not named in the Rovers squad despite hopes he could be set for a long-awaited return from a thigh problem that has kept him out since December.

In Italy, Mark Bresciano played almost a full match to help Palmero to a 2-1 win over his former club Parma in a win that saw them leapfrog Juventus into fifth place.

The midfielder is on the comeback trail from a back injury which has seen him limited to just one match in the last month.

In Turkey, Australia captain Lucas Neill played a full match as Galatasaray were held to a scoreless draw at Kayserispor.

Former Brisbane Roar captain Craig Moore enjoyed his first win with Greek side Kavala in a 1-0 win over PAS Giannina.
