Alex Brosque believes his Sydney FC strike partner John Aloisi deserves to be in contention for a surprise Socceroos recall in next month’s Asian Cup Qualifier against Indonesia.

Aloisi has been in scintillating form in recent weeks with four goals in his last four games and he scored one of the goals of the season against Melbourne on Sunday to help Sydney lift their first Premiers Plate.

The 34-year-old striker, who scored the winning penalty that took Australia to the 2006 World Cup, has not played for the Socceroos since a World Cup qualifier against Qatar in Melbourne two years ago.

While a call-up would seem unlikely, question marks over the availability of overseas-based players, and an ankle injury to Melbourne striker Archie Thompson, mean Aloisi could come into the reckoning when the squad is picked on Wednesday.

Brosque believes if the squad is selected on current form, the experienced Aloisi would be a chance to play in the side that will be out to clinch Asian Cup qualification against Indonesia in Brisbane on March 3.

“The way he’s been playing, why not?” Brosque said at the A-League finals series launch in Sydney on Monday.

“He’s been excellent and if for games like this players are picked on form then I think Johnny would have to be a shot.

“He’s playing well, he’s scored a fair few goals in the last few weeks so I don’t see why not.”

Brosque, one of the form strikers of this year’s competition, is hoping to earn a place in the squad after he was ruled out of the 2-2 draw in Kuwait last month following a last-minute groin injury.

“I hope that I do get the chance because last game was disappointing and looking from that camp on, it seemed like it would be my only chance,” Brosque said.

“I’m hoping I’ll get a chance this game and with Archie out.

“It’s a disappointing that the door’s closed for him but hopefully it opens for me and gives me a chance which I hope I can take.”
