Room for AFL and NRL in western Sydney

Last night saw the battle of the footy codes being played out in the west of Sydney. Blacktown, very much a traditional rugby league heartland, saw the Sydney Swans take on Carlton in a pre-season NAB Cup match.

Just 15 minutes down the road, Penrith and Parramatta were playing in a feisty local derby at CUA stadium.

In a very good turnout, 11,000 odd people turned out to see Penrith win 32-12 whilst 9,700 people watched Sydney defeat Carlton 71-59 to progress through in the NAB Cup.

Both crowds were excellent for trial games, and this proves that there is enough room for both codes to play their sports in Sydney.

With a massive population, both codes could only except crowds to rise in the coming years. I do not think the AFL is a threat to the NRL. It will in fact act as the opposite, forcing more people to go to the games to support their teams.
