The Storm punishment does not fit the crime

The NRL have found that the Melbourne Storm have breached the salary cap by $1.7m over five years and have stripped them of all the titles including three minor premierships and two premiership plus two fines of $1.6m. They also cannot accrue any competition points in 2010.

By not allowing the Storm to collect competition points this season makes a mockery of the entire premiership.

By all means strip them of their 8 points accrued so far this season and maybe even some more, but by giving them zero chance of playing in the semi finals they have penalized the entire game.

Who will be interested in watching a Storm game this season when the players have nothing to play for except pride?

The game has already attracted negative press when the Roosters played in the last round in 2009 against the Sharks. Both teams could not make the semis and the mail was rife that players had bet against their own team.

So what happens now if the Storm is beaten easily by a lowly rated team? Will the rumors start again? The NRL should not have put the game in this position.

I have calculated that a team will require 29 points to make the semis, so why not strip the Storm of their accrued 8 points plus another 8 and then at least they have a mathematical chance of being competitive and we will have a fair dinkum competition.

The competition this year will now be a joke and I feel sorry for the many supporters in Victoria.

The NRL have penalized everyone when they should have focused on the culprits.
