Parramatta NRL star Jarryd Hayne believes the Melbourne Storm should play for competition points in 2010 but with star players sidelined each week to bring the side in line with salary cap requirements.
Asked about the NRL’s decision to ban the Storm from accruing competition points after they were found guilty of systematic breaches of the salary cap, Hayne told BigPond Sports Weekend that a better solution needs to be found.
“You would think that they could come up with something a bit more than playing for no points. I know they’ve broken the rules but you would think they could come up with a better alternative,” Hayne said.
“One thing that struck my mind, that stood out, was that their five top players, maybe each week two of their top five have to have a rest because they’ve broken the salary cap.
“Sitting out one would cover the difference in the salary cap and then the other would be punishment for breaking the salary cap. It would even it up.”
Hayne said the current system means teams are losing to an illegal football team.
“Now you’ve got a team that’s at full strength, over the salary cap and they’re beating teams that could potentially miss out on the top eight because of it,” Hayne said.
Hayne was adamant Parramatta didn’t deserve to be handed the 2009 Premiership as a result of Melbourne’s breaches.
“It’s good that we didn’t get the premiership because we didn’t deserve it,” he said.
“We got beaten on the day. It’s a bit tough to say by a better team, because they were over the salary cap, but it is what it is and we just have to put it behind us and look forward to this year.”
