How much has the media loved the Storm’s salary cap scandal? It’s back to the Super Leagu days, with News Ltd taking on Fairfax and sports writers for all sports having an opinion on one of the biggest sports stories in Australian sport history.
Perhaps cries of the death of the Melbourne Storm and Rugby League in Victoria which was reported late Thursday the 22nd of April seems rather premature now considering how the club has managed to win their last two games for zero competition points and the fans are sticking behind their club and also the game.
It’s comical now remembering Tony Jones’ report from Melbourne for the NRL’s Footy show saying “we are seeing fans dump their merchandise at the club’s door,” when in fact it was two fans who dropped off their storm gear.
On the Sunday night, more than 24,000 people attended the game, the Storm’s second highest ever regular season home crowd and cheered the team to a resounding victory over fierce rivals, the New Zealand Warriors.
Adding to the crowd was 312,000 people tuning in on Fox Sports, the highest ratings for a Rugby League match this season.
The Storm have since sold nearly 1,000 new memberships and have broken 2009’s membership record.
A week later and the journos repeat what they say the week before: “this week the Storm have nothing to play for, they won’t get up for this game”. 34 points to 6 later and the Storm are showing just how much passion they have.
Yes it’s early days for the Melbourne Storm after their darkest day. I cannot predict the future of how the team will play in the next few weeks, and how many fans will turn up towards the end of the season, which is why it would be nice to see people in the media stop trying to predict their demise.
Perhaps as crazy as it sounds, the Salary Cap Scandal for the Melbourne Storm has been the trigger for Melbourne people to embrace their club and take as their own.
