Adelaide stalwart Tyson Edwards has stunned his AFL club by deciding to immediately retire. Edwards on Thursday informed the Crows he would not extend his 320-game AFL career.

Edwards’ shock decision comes just two days after Adelaide captain Simon Goodwin announced he would retire at season’s end.

The 33-year-old Edwards was hailed by Adelaide’s chief executive Steven Trigg as “one of the all-time greats of the AFL”.

“He will be remembered for an extraordinary impact on our club, as a player of incredible consistency, durability and talent,” Trigg said in a statement on Thursday.

“He has been exemplary in everything he’s done, and as a 300-game player, and with two premierships, he’s not only one of the competition’s all-time best players but a much loved person to many people in our club.”

Edwards, who has played every games this season, was a member of Adelaide’s premiership sides in 1997 and 1998.

The prolific onballer was runner-up in the Crows’ club champion award three times, and finished third in 2004.

Edwards was not immediately available for comment and will hold a media conference on Friday.
