Its no fluke, there is something developing over in the west, and it’s to do with the foreign footy code of rugby league. Last week Western Australia won its eighth title in 10 years after beating Victoria 25-24 in the national final.

Once again showing, even without a team in the NRL, Western Australia is the best junior rugby league state outside of NSW and QLD.

This will only add more fuel to the fire for rugby league to expand its horizons, and look outside the strongholds of the Central Coast and Central Queensland to expand the game nationally.

I wrote an article for The Roar a few months ago about a Perth team making perfect sense, and while the AFL is relying on a rugby league players to get the locals interested in the game, rugby league could have a Perth based NRL team by 2013, and ready made locals who have actually played the game.

In terms of NRL expansion, for the the good of the game, a Perth NRL team has to be first cab off the rank.
