St Kilda star Lenny Hayes has “bigger fish to fry” than worrying about his shock omission from the All-Australian team. The midfield star was the most contentious non-selection from the team announced on Monday night which included only two Saints – defender Brendon Goddard and midfielder Leigh Montagna.
Hayes said he felt he had had another good season, but was unconcerned about missing out.
“I think I’ve been fairly consistent and the team’s had some good success as well, we finished third on the ladder and hopefully we’ve got a few more games to go,” Hayes said.
“It’s obviously a very tough job for the selectors. It was great to see Joey (Montagna) and BJ make the side but we’ve obviously got bigger fish to fry this season, hopefully starting with the Bulldogs on Saturday night.
“It’s probably one of those things that at the end of your career you probably look back on (but) you play football to play in grand finals and for premierships and to have that team success.
“The things that individually come along, they’re always nice and probably more when you’re 50 or 60 and you can look back and tell everyone how good you were.
“At the moment you’re just focusing on a premiership and that’s what every player wants.”
St Kilda football manager Greg Hutchison said Hayes had had “a really good year”.
“And that would be reflected in how he would go in our best and fairest, which is a true indication of where we rate his year,” Hutchison said.
