The reluctance by the AFL to introduce extra time to the AFL grand final is archaic, ridiculous and totally unfair on both the players and its fans.

The AFL grand final must be the only major sporting event that doesn’t produce a result on the day.

To ask the players to back up again after they have given everything that they have give, both emotionally and physically, is beyond belief and left the AFL open to deserved criticism of its lack of foresight.

The coaching staff, physicians and sports psychologists will have to work overtime to get their players up again and ready for battle for the second time in a week.

There was a real sense of bewilderment and frustration from those players immediately interviewed after the first final and they all expressed their desire to have played on to get a result.

At some stage in the very near future the AFL have to catch up with the other sporting codes and stop living in the dark ages.

The AFL’s refusal to introduce video technology is another blight on their game and having their umpires penalise players for the most trivial of offences to the extent that they almost blow the pea out of their whistle makes the game as a spectacle less attractive.

Surely common sense will prevail and this situation will never be repeated again with a winning team able to hold aloft the ‘Holy Grail’ on grand final day.
