Australia must find a way past Sachin Tendulkar when day three of the second Test begins in Bangalore to take advantage of the handsome first innings given to them by a Marcus North century.

Tendulkar (44no) had the makings of a significant partnership with the young opener Murali Vijay (42no) when India closed at 2-128 in reply to 478.

Still sprightly at 37, Tendulkar passed 14,000 runs in Tests by lashing Nathan Hauritz to the cover fence in the fading light.

Hauritz has an important day ahead of him, after a public difference of opinion with his captain Ricky Ponting over how he should bowl.

In 11.2 overs on the second evening Hauritz went for 45 runs and will need to be much tighter if he is to create the pressure required to defeat Tendulkar and company.

He can take inspiration from the efforts of North, who was satisfied to answer questions not just from outside, but from himself.

“I knew I was under pressure going into this game, not just outside influences but also the standards I set myself,” he said.

“I’ve had a couple of disappointing Test matches so I thought it was an opportunity to go in on a pretty good batting surface and get a score.

“It is a satisfying hundred without a doubt because I was under a lot of pressure, the last Test before the Ashes.

“It was nice to get a score and contribute.”
