UFC 123 is in the books with a number of notable results and stories to come out of the Detroit showdown.

Main event:

Quinton “Rampage” Jackson defeated Lyoto Machida via Split Decision.

‘Rampage’ fought a sometimes interesting and a sometimes ‘looking for the remote between rounds’ fight.

While it went to a decision, and a few people had Lyoto in front at the end of the third, I don’t think anyone could say it was a horrible outcome.

Rampage was stepping forward and Lyoto was doing his best to control the distant. By backing away.

Main card:

BJ Penn defeated Matt Hughes via TKO (Strikes) Rd 1
Phil Davis defeated Tim Boetsch via Submission (Kimura) Rd 2
George Sotiropoulos defeated Joe Lauzon via Submission (Kimura) Rd 2
Maiquel Jose Falcao Goncalves defeated Gerald Harris via Unanimous Decision

BJ Penn; the guy is a freak. After his last two fights people were putting a line through his name. Then BJ knocked out Matt Hughes in 25 seconds.

He decided to run out of the cage before Hughes could figure out what happened. BJ to his credit came back and said all the right things but you have to wonder about a fighter that is so polar in his attitude and results.

He looked good at 170 pounds but that was for 25 seconds. When he comes against the bigger 170s that will lean against him on the fence we will see where BJ’s true heart lies.

George Sotiropoulos looked slow and awkward in his first round but to his credit he weathered the early storm from Lauzon to take a Kimura over a gassing opponent in the second round.

While the boxing of George has a bit to be improved upon, his ground game is off the charts. Credit must to Eddie Bravo with his obvious coaching/development. I only hope he doesn’t run into a decent striker with a good sprawl.

Spike TV broadcast:

Brian Foster defeated Matt Brown via Submission (Guillotine Choke) Round 2
Mark Munoz defeated Aaron Simpson via Unanimous Decision
Dennis Hallman defeated Karo Parisyan via technical knockout (strikes) in round one
Edson Barboza defeated Mike Lullo via technical knockout (kicks) in round three
Paul Kelly defeated T.J. O’Brien via technical knockout (strikes) in round two
Nik Lentz defeated Tyson Griffin via split decision

What’s next:

BJ is fighting Fitch in Sydney at UFC 127 as the Main Event.

George is fighting Siver in Sydney at 127 – not for the title like all Aussie’s hoped.

Parisyan got given his walking papers (again) from the UFC. Not sure where Parisyan is going to end up but I’d be surprised if StrikeForce picks him up. He looked… not quite right.

Rampage should be looking for the winner of Bader and Jones and be back in the title hunt with another win.

Machida should take a holiday and reassess his fighting style. He either has to win the fight by KO or submission. He needs to push the action. He won’t win a fight (by points) if he backs away because the judges and more importantly, his opponents, are now wise to him.

The next UFC event is the TUF final on the 5th followed by UFC 124 SGP vs Koscheck 2 on the 12th.
