Australia will set about the task of collecting the final five England wickets to square the Ashes series on Sunday when the third Test enters its fourth day at the WACA ground.

Chasing a distant 391, the Englishmen will resume at 5-81 after losing Paul Collingwood to the final ball of the day by Australian quick Ryan Harris (2-22).

Having dominated the first two Tests with the bat, the English now look vulnerable and paceman Peter Siddle said their strong form could not last forever.

“To their credit they batted real well in those first few matches and we couldn’t break it and it was just a matter of being patient and bowling as a good group.

“I think that’s what’s changed here, all four quicks have bowled with patience and consistency and great partnerships together.

“That’s put the pressure right on and we’ve worked hard together to maintain partnerships.”

The Australians seem to have enjoyed a greater share of good fortune in this Test and Siddle put that down to a more upbeat attitude.

“When you’re upbeat and showing a lot of energy and excitement in the field and you’re confident, you do get that luck and you do feel good out in the field, and that’s what we showed from the very start here,” he said.

“All that stuff comes around, it’s always going to turn and and it’s starting to turn for us, which is a good result.”

England paceman Chris Tremlett, having taken eight wickets for the match, refused to concede defeat despite the enormous task confronting the remaining six batsmen.

“There’s still tomorrow, we still believe we can do it,” he said.

“Throughout the series the dressing room has been pretty calm. Even though we lost a few wickets we still remained pretty calm.

“It’s a long shot but we still believe we can put a partnership together and win this game.”
