Aussies on par with Bangladesh's worst

For my sins, I am a fan of the mighty Bangladesh Tigers. Watching Australia at the MCG on Boxing Day 2010 gave me horrible, horrible flashbacks of Bangladesh at their worst.

Here’s how they got out in Dhaka against South Africa in 2006-7. This was one of our bad defeats – and note most of the team has been dropped in the years since.

Fans of Australian cricket, compare the two sets of dismissals and weep. Note in both the wafts outside off stump, the impatience, and the unwillingness to take their time. At the MCG on Boxing Day 2010, Australia batted as bad as Bangladesh in one of their big defeats:

0.2 – Steyn to Tamim Iqbal, OUT. What a start! Gets the ball to swing in before landing on a good length, Tamim shapes to flick it past midwicket but gets a thick inside edge onto his pads. The ball shoots up and Steyn runs forward and takes it easily. He didn’t even have to reconfirm with umpire Aleem Dar.

Tamim Iqbal – c & b Steyn 0 (2m 2b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00.

2.3 – Steyn to Junaid Siddique, OUT. Steyn removes the openers; pitches outside off, just short of a driveable length, Junaid can’t resist chasing that and ends up getting a thick outside edge, and Boucher does well to dive to his left and catch it front of Smith at first slip.

Junaid Siddique c †Boucher b Steyn 1 (13m 7b 0x4 0x6) SR: 14.28.

10.5 Morkel to Habibul Bashar, OUT. Well taken by McKenzie; pitched up outside the off stump, lures Bashar onto the drive, he gets forward but fails to cover the line and the ball catches the outside edge, shooting low to Neil McKenzie at third slip who takes it in front of him.

Habibul Bashar c McKenzie b Morkel 11 (39m 23b 1×4 0x6) SR: 47.82.

14.5 Morkel to Shahriar Nafees, OUT. A wicket falls just when things are looking up for the home side; pitches on middle stump and curves away, lures Nafees onto the drive, he leans forward half heartedly and gets an outside edge to Smith at first slip, who takes it at waist height.

Shahriar Nafees c Smith b Morkel 25 (73m 47b 3×4 0x6) SR: 53.19.

22.5 Botha to Mohammad Ashraful, OUT. Rush of blood; flighted outside off, lands on a fullish length, Ashraful tries to biff that past the bowler but ends up hitting it low to him. Botha takes it just inches off the ground, Ashraful is in doubt if the ball was grassed but replays show a clean catch.

Mohammad Ashraful c & b Botha 34 (58m 27b 7×4 0x6) SR: 125.92.

Very familiar state of affairs as far as Bangladesh is concerned. The top order just didn’t show enough patience to stick it out. The slips were kept busy and the bowlers made the batsmen play and induce mistakes. Ashraful’s dismissal was untimely. Aftab had shown good application by curbing his aggressive instincts, and lot depended on him as Bangladesh turned to damage control after lunch.

42.3 Botha to Aftab Ahmed, OUT. Aftab suddenly loses his patience; tosses it up outside the off stump, invites Aftab to loft, he tries to cart that one over the infield on the off side but fails to clear mid-off. Ntini is right at the edge of the circle to take it.

Aftab Ahmed c Ntini b Botha 44 (129m 84b 2×4 0x6) SR: 52.38.

43.2 Morkel to Shakib Al Hasan, OUT. Brilliant reflexes by de Villiers; full and wide outside the off stump, Shakib can’t resist chasing it and ends up getting an outside edge which flies quickly to de Villiers who cups it at wide second slip. He takes it in front of his face.

Shakib Al Hasan c de Villiers b Morkel 30 (99m 69b 4×4 0x6) SR: 43.47.

43.3 Morkel to Mohammad Rafique, OUT. Thick inside edge, unlucky for Rafique, Morkel dishes out a quick yorker on middle stump, Rafique moves across his stumps and thuds it onto his foot, after a rather prolonged appeal umpire Bucknor raises the finger.

Mohammad Rafique lbw b Morkel 0 (2m 1b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00.

53.3 Morkel to Mushfiqur Rahim, OUT. That’s a five-for for Morkel; delivers a fast yorker on off stump, Rahim fails to get his bat down on time and the ball just clips the off stump. Morkel actually appeals, without realising he actually hit the stumps.

Mushfiqur Rahim b Morkel 7 (53m 26b 0x4 0x6) SR: 26.92.

54.4 Steyn to Mashrafe Mortaza, OUT. It’s all over; Mortaza attempts another slog by giving himself room outside leg, Steyn directs it at the furniture this time and pegs the leg stump back.

Mashrafe Mortaza b Steyn 29 (49m 42b 4×4 0x6) SR: 69.04.
