George Sotiropoulos: Where to now, Georgie?

UFC 127 certainly did not go according to plan for the Aussie contingent.

Sure Anthony Perosh got the W with a messy Rear Naked Choke in his light heavy weight battle against Tom Blackledge, but this intrepid reporter was in the “line” for beer while that was going down and missed the whole thing.

(I say “line” because unless you were chasing a Tap Out brand shirt or some giant inflatable UFC punching gloves there was no such thing. I’ve never received a beer quicker in my life! God bless the UFC fans)

James Te Huna came out of the gates like a raging bull only to gas out and be sent back to pasture by IKEA’s own Alexander Gustaffsen.

Kyle Noke proved that 3 years as the bodyguard of a man regularly getting attacked by crocodile is more than enough training to put away Chris Camozzi with a very impressive tap out victory in the first, but having said that, Greg Jackson may have had something to do with it, too.

And then there was George Sotiropoulos. Sots, our boy Georgie, boasting a 7-0 win streak, a title shot in his sights and strong wins over his last 3 high quality opponents.

As the “c’mon Georgie, c’mon” chants shook the roof off Acer arena, the great Australian hope walked into the cage ready to take on his destiny.

Enter the German, Dennis Siver, and the spinning back-kick of doom.

Flashes of Poland circa 1939 swarmed the Arena as the German kick boxer Blitzkrieg’d his way through poor Aussie George.

Unable to buy a takedown (we can only assume they sold out quicker than the inflatable gloves) poor Aussie George was outmatched on his feet and put on his ass more than once in the first. The writing was on the wall.

C’mon George, shoot! A single, a double, anything!

The fact George rallied like he did and took it to a decision speaks volumes to his class and skill. But in a stacked division like 155, with a whole new crop of talent rising from the ranks of WEC, it’s a hard road back for our Aussie George.

C’mon Aussie, c’mon!
