Former Socceroos manager Guus Hiddink is odds-on favourite to replace Chelsea’s Carlo Ancelotti who faces the sack at the end of this season after his team’s Champions League exit.

Ancelotti is expected to leave the club, in its third year of failing to yield a trophy, after being knocked out of the competition on Tuesday by Manchester United at Old Trafford.

British media on Thursday was abuzz with speculation about who will replace Ancelotti, and online bookmaker William Hill put 64-year-old Hiddink as favourite at 5-2.

The former Dutch player, who led Australia to its best ever finish in the 2006 FIFA World Cup, is mid-contract with Turkey which is still in with a chance of qualifying for the finals of the European Championship.

“He will not break his contract with the Turkish federation,” a representative told Britain’s The Independent newspaper of Hiddink.

“There is no chance of him sharing his job like he did before with Chelsea and Russia. So the only way he could leave is if he is sacked after a bad result.”

Chelsea’s billionaire owner Roman Abramovich, who will decide Ancelotti’s fate, turned to Hiddink three seasons ago when he stepped in as caretaker manager after the sacking of Luiz Felipe Scolari.

Other possible candidates for Chelsea’s top job include one-time Dutch national team manager Marco van Basten, current Porto manager Andre Villas-Boas, and former Champions League winner with Liverpool Rafael Benitez, The Daily Telegraph reports.
