Michael Katsidis is still looking for an opponent for his first fight in Australia in five years, after Mexico’s IBF lightweight boxing world champion Miguel Vazquez knocked back his challenge.

Katsidis, whose last bout in a local ring was in June 2006 in Brisbane, issued the challenge earlier in the week.

Vasquez’s last win was over another Australian, Lenny Zappavigna.

“The response was an expected one from the team,” Katsidis’ trainer and manager Brendon Smith said.

“‘We don’t believe Australia can afford our guy’ was the basis of their response.

“Maybe they should check the Aussie dollar versus the US, before ruling the fight out on the basis of money.

“We know and they know Michael is a dangerous fight, and we believe that is closer to the reason they won’t come down under.”

Since 2006, the 30-year-old Toowoomba-born boxer has had 10 fights overseas, seven of them in the US, two in England and one in the Philippines.

A number of cities are in contention to host his next fight in Australia including Melbourne, Brisbane and Toowoomba.

Smith was hoping a fight with Vazquez would take place in mid to late August.

Katsidis last fought in April, when he suffered a unanimous points loss to American Robert Guerrero for the interim WBA and WBO lightweight world titles.
