North Melbourne star forward Drew Petrie booted three last-quarter goals as the Kangaroos held out the Western Bulldogs in a thrilling AFL shoot-out at Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

The Kangaroos, bouncing back from a record 117-point loss to Collingwood last round, ended the Dogs’ four-match winning streak with the 21.16 (142) to 17.9 (111) victory.

The lead changed eight times early in the last term, before North surged home with six of the last seven goals, three of those to Petrie, who capped an enormous game with 5.5 and 11 marks.

Midfielders Jack Ziebell, Andrew Swallow and Daniel Wells also starred for the Roos, while skipper Brent Harvey had a big late impact after a quiet start.

In a see-sawing match, the Bulldogs led by 20 points during the first term, with midfield star Adam Cooney in fine touch early, while Harvey, tagged by Liam Picken, had just one touch in the first quarter.

But Harvey, who moved onto Cooney for a stint early in the second quarter, worked himself into the match, while Cooney faded.

With Wells, Ziebell and Swallow dominating the midfield and Petrie firing in attack, the Kangaroos scored eight goals to two in the second term to lead by 27 points at the main break.

That stretched to 33 early in the third quarter, before the Bulldogs made their own charge to close to within five points at the last change.

Midfielder Daniel Cross worked hard to control Wells, while skipper Matthew Boyd and Callan Ward fought hard, young small forward Luke Dahlhaus kicked two third-term goals and marking target Barry Hall (five goals) posed a big threat.

But after the lead continually swapped hands early in the final term, with Hall kicking two early goals, North midfielders Ziebell and Swallow held sway late in the game and stalwarts Harvey and Petrie kicked important goals to lift the ‘Roos to a crucial win.
