Collingwood have ruled out skipper Nick Maxwell for Friday night’s AFL top of the table clash with Geelong at the MCG.

Magpies coach Mick Malthouse said Maxwell, who is recovering well from a thumb injury, would play in a practice match on Friday.

“He’s one or two days off, that’s all,” Malthouse said on Thursday.

Halfback Heath Shaw will also play in the practice match and is set to return from an eight-week suspension for next weekend’s qualifying final against West Coast.

Utility Sharrod Wellingham trained strongly after being out for two weeks with a groin injury, as did defender Chris Tarrant who was rested last week.

Meanwhile, Magpies premiership big man Leigh Brown is retiring after the 2011 season.

Brown, whose career was resurrected by Malthouse after stints at Fremantle and North Melbourne, says he wants to get involved in coaching.

“It feels like I have got it off my chest by telling the club and my teammates. It was a really nice moment this morning,” Brown said on Thursday.
