Thaiday cops two-week ban [video]

The Brisbane Broncos’ premiership hopes have taken a hit with key back-rower Sam Thaiday to miss two NRL games after making an early guilt plea for a dangerous throw.

The Queensland and Australian forward was cited for his lifting tackle on Manly prop Brent Kite in Sunday’s 18-0 win over the Sea Eagles.

The suspension puts Thaiday out for the Bronco’s semi-final against the New Zealand Warriors, and if they win that match, then the following finals game as well.

The Broncos had the option of challenging the grading of the charge from grade two, which would have meant Thaiday was available for the Warriors match, but decided not to risk another week’s suspension if that had failed.

The loss of Thaiday is a big blow for the Broncos, with the forward in stellar form and tipped to be named the Dally M second-rower of the year tonight.

The Broncos will also be missing young fullback Josh Hoffman, who is out for the season, against the Warriors but may welcome back star centre Justin Hodges.

Former Queensland and Australia representative Chris Close told The Australian the grading system for the dangerous throw charge should be scrapped because of its inconsistency.

“Dave Taylor is ousted, Paul Gallen is exonerated and Akulia Uate is exonerated,” Close said.

“There hasn’t been consistency, so let’s make sure we get that, going forward.

“It seems it doesn’t matter if a player gets 100 weeks or one week, it doesn’t change anything. At the spur of the moment, in the heat of battle, the tackles still happen.

“So what they need to do is come up with a uniform penalty that covers a lifting tackle regardless of the outcome.

“Whatever that penalty is, I don’t care, but it should be the same for every tackle where somebody’s body is over the horizontal.”

The Broncos faces the Warriors at Suncorp Stadium at 6.30pm on September 10.
