Australia qualified for the Asian Football Confederation U-16 Championship after defeating Indonesia 5-2 in Bangkok.

The result on Thursday night means the Joeys finished second in their group behind Thailand.

Taylor Tombides was able to get the Joeys off to a perfect start by scoring in the third minute, capitalising on an intercept following some early pressure on the Indonesian defence.

Indonesia equalised in the ninth minute, but Australian defender Aaron Calver restored the lead a minute later when he headed home a Lukas Stergiou corner and, shortly before halftime, Reece Papadimitrios converted from the penalty spot after Tombides was fouled.

Hyunga Tanner added Australia’s fourth goal in the 63rd minute, but Indonesia pegged one back three minutes later from a fast counter attack.

The match was sealed in the 78th minute when Tombides scored his second of the match and ninth of the tournament to complete a memorable 5-2 victory.

In the other Group G matches, Thailand continued their unbeaten run with a 6-2 win over Hong Kong while Myanmar defeated Guam 7-0.

Next year’s AFC U-16 Championship will serve as the qualifying event for the 2013 FIFA U-17 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates.
