Rain dents Redbacks T20 semis hopes

Rain has dented South Australia’s prospects of making the Champions League Twenty20 cricket semi-finals in India, with their clash with English county Somerset in Bangalore washed out on Saturday.

Rain started falling a few minutes before the scheduled start as Somerset prepared to bat after losing the toss.

South Australia had named an unchanged side, with speedster Shaun Tait left out for the second straight game.

Each team was awarded one point for a no result.

The point temporarily lifts the Redbacks one spot into third place above India’s Kolkata Knight Riders, who are scheduled to play the ladder leading Warriors from South Africa in the second game of the double header, weather permitting.

The English county have played one game fewer and remain above SA on run rate, with the Redbacks having the worst percentage of all five teams in the group.

SA must now win their last group game against India’s Royal Challengers Bangalore and probably need to hope other results work in their favour if they are to emulate their 2010 achievement of making the last four.
