A dazed Roar has the hounds baying

I can hear the hounds baying all throughout the A-League at the prospect of bringing Brisbane back into the pack after a tear-away fourteen months.

Against Sydney last week Brisbane stumbled inexplicably, looking for all the world like a prize fighter that had taken a lucky punch from a slugging competitor.

Last night they came out still groggy against a determined Melbourne Heart.

Brisbane was un-composed and rattled and found themselves two goals down by half-time for the second week in a row.

A dose of smelling salts and an injection of eager substitutes seemed to awaken their collective energies and get them back into the contest but it was not enough to salvage even a draw on their home turf.

They are clearly bruised, bewildered and obviously beatable and their future looks challenging.

The next encounter is a mid-week fixture over the ditch in Dunedin.

Ricky Herbert may not want it, but I can see his players just wishing the weekend away and mentally fixing themselves on the prospect of taking out the sluggish champs on home soil.

The Kiwis have struggled lately to find their once impenetrable home ground advantage but they should be salivating at getting Brisbane on Kiwi soil (albeit not at the cake tin) while the Roar are flat.

The hounds might be baying even louder the following week when Brisbane take on Arnie’s men who would dearly love to avenge the grand final loss and the domination they received in week one of this season.

I can see Arnie foaming at the mouth as he shouts at the boys, “see, they can be beaten!” If the Mariners are ever going to get one over the Roar then now is the time to go for the jugular.

Ange gets a Boxing Day present with the struggling Gold Coast, but it is a local derby and anything can happen.

Then, to cap off what could be a torrid December for the Roar, the year finishes with the visit of Melbourne Victory.

Regardless of Victory’s form at that time they have proven to be Roar’s most formidable opponent during Brisbane’s winning run and Melbourne won’t want to miss an occasion to spoil the Champions’ New Year celebrations.

Football is a funny game.

Unbeaten after an Australian record 36 games followed by two losses in two weeks and we might see more before the month of December is out.

The Roar might fight back with the aggression of a wounded lion, but with the smell of blood in the air, the hounds are circling and anything is possible.
